Age Group Information

Recreation/Pre-Competitive soccer is based on classroom age with a birth date range of August 1 through July 31.  This is not changing for recreation/pre-competitive soccer. For competitive soccer which starts at U8 or U9 age-level the age rules are changing. In the Fall of 2016, for all competitive soccer teams (not recreation), the governing bodies, USYSA (United States Youth Soccer Association), KYSA (Kansas Youth Soccer Association) and HSA (Heartland Soccer Association), have all decided to switch teams to be based on birth year, not school classroom or the previous Aug 1 through July 31 age date range.

This new rule is going to effect those kids who were born later in the year and started school the following year – typically for kids with an August – December birth dates. Please keep this in mind as you select the age group for your child  to compete in.  Age groups are defined by age and under, so a U7 player is 7 years old and under. The kids move up in age group in the Fall season.

Pre-K

The pre-k program is designed for the 4-5 year old child who will enter kindergarten the following year. This basic, fun introduction to soccer will include a Saturday practice (30 minutes) and short game (30 minutes). OPSC trainers will organize the practice sessions and help the coaches instruct the kids. The six game season will be played at Nall Park at 105th and Nall, Overland Park. New players will receive a jersey with their registration. Teams are co-ed and organized by preschool, friend group, or area of kindergarten attendance. Players must wear shin guards with soccer socks over the shin guards. Soccer cleats are not required but are highly recommended. No earrings!

Interested in coaching? We rely on volunteers to coach our recreational soccer teams. We provide training materials and equipment for each new coach! Pre-k teams have approximately 6-8 players per team.Check out the overview page for more general information.
